Value Creation Examples

Kite Hill

Contributing Source: 2022 Impact Report

Kite Hill produces plant-based dairy products made from clean ingredients like almonds. By replacing conventional dairy products with healthier, plant-based alternatives, consumers can improve the climate and resource impacts of their diets. Almond milk is one-fifth as carbon intensive as dairy milk and producing it only takes 60% of the comparative amount of water. This alternative helped avoid 27 million pounds of carbon emissions and reduced water usage by 340 million gallons in 2022 - also resulting in cost savings.

Copper Cow Coffee

Contributing Source: 2022 Impact Report

Copper Cow works with coffee farmers in Vietnam to improve bean quality and sustainability of growing and processing methods. By repurposing coffee cherries into an organic fertilizer, Copper Cow enabled farmers to reduce chemical fertilizer use by 30%, or 32.5MT in 2022 alone. The company pays higher prices for these better-quality, sustainably grown beans and keeps value-added services like coffee roasting in Vietnam, resulting in a 2x increase in price to local farmers. This improves farmer livelihoods and boosts the reputation of Vietnamese coffee as a gourmet experience.

Alpen

Contributing Source: 2022 Impact Report

As a window manufacturer, Alpen's innovative use of lightweight thin glass technology saves embodied energy in glass production and provides best-in-class lifetime insulating performance. The superior durability of Alpen’s products have been shown to outlast competitors by more than a decade. This both reduces carbon emissions and saves customers money on energy bills. The company often partners with startups to continuously seek cost-effective ways to innovate for its customers.

Perch Energy

Contributing Source: 2022 Impact Report

Perch offers affordable renewable energy products for consumers, businesses, and solar asset owners. As part of increasing accessibility, its Community Solar (CS) initiative provides an alternative to home solar systems and is available to the 50% of Americans/families who do not own homes, including low- and moderate-income (LMI) customers who are more often renters. The Inflation Reduction Act provides $7 billion for states to create or expand distributed generation programs like CS and bonus tax credits for solar projects serving LMI customers. Perch is expanding its efforts in LMI communities to raise awareness about CS and develop tools that make customer onboarding easier and more efficient via hiring a Chief Strategy and Analytics Officer and a consumer-focused executive to its Board of Directors.
