Biffa

Contributing Source: 2022 ESG Report

As a sustainable waste management provider, Biffa’s integrated waste management approach prioritizes prevention, recycling, and energy recovery, reducing reliance on landfill disposal. Serving commercial customers and households alike, 98.5% of plastic waste collected by Biffa is recycled within the U.K. In 2022, it expanded recycling capabilities and services to support customer sustainability goals and promote the circular economy. This increased plastic recycling capacity from 63,000 to 151,000 tons in 2022, and saved up to 71,000 tCO2e compared to energy recovery. Additionally, its recent collaboration with Heineken increased landfill diversion from 89% to 97%, cutting waste management costs by roughly 40%. In furthering its commitment to circularity, Biffa recently acquired Company Shop Group, which redistributes surplus produce at deeply discounted prices through a network of supermarkets — and where 35,000 tons of surplus produce prevented from going to waste to date.
